BASIC setups include open setups, classic setups, games of 9 or less people with largely basic roles.
INTERMEDIATE setups are not basic but still fairly easy to grasp. Usually variations of basic setups.
ADVANCED setups include closed setups, unusual/unorthodox setups, games of 11 players or more with more complex roles.
Closed setups are automatically considered non-basic.
When a set number of players is not stated, the setup given is only the basic setup, and this varies according to number of players.
Click HERE for an article on the MafiaScum wiki on the definition of a "normal" game.
NOTE: This classification of setups is largely unreliable in the sense that mafia is a game of constant reinvention. Most mods will create closed theme games, as is the standard, which may or may not abide to any of the setups here. This just provides a general idea, and is a good place for future mods to farm ideas for setups.
One must understand that a closed game is just that- closed. You will not be told what setup is being used as this turns it into an Open game. ANY and ALL setups and funny variations thereof can be used in Closed games. Being familiar with some setups will just enable you to better recognize them if they are used. Hence, any setup marked CLOSED simply means that it is a setup that has been used in a closed game before.
ALSO NOTE: Any closed variations of the basic setups are considered intermediate at least, excepting C9 Closed.
The setup info listed here may not be accurate 100% of the time.
This list is far from comprehensive and is constantly updated.
Meaning: I'll work on this when my keyboard is less retarded or when I'm more bored.
BASIC
Basic games are ideal for newbies and fast games with easy-to-grasp mechanics and using only basic power roles, namely the Cop, Doctor, Lyncher, Lynchee, Jester, Vigilante, and Mason. Sanities are not a factor, and there are only two factions, one pro-town and one anti-town. There is NO theming done in basic games.
Newbie: Fake C9 - OPEN
7 players, 2 factions (Mafia, Town)
TOWN- 3 Townies, 1 Cop, 1 Doctor
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
The most basic form of Mafia and the one you'll see most often among this community. Note that several breaking strategies have been discovered for this variant, and hence is considered obsolete in most playing circles.
C9 - CLOSED
RANDOM SETUP OUT OF FOUR:
7 players, 2 factions (Mafia, Town)
TOWN- 3 Townies, 1 Cop, 1 Doctor
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
7 players, 2 factions (Mafia, Town)
TOWN- 4 Townies, 1 Doctor
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
7 players, 2 factions (Mafia, Town)
TOWN- 4 Townies, 1 Cop
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
7 players, 2 factions (Mafia, Town)
TOWN- 5 Townies
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
Most of the breaking strategies for the basic newbie setup abused the known presence of a cop or a doctor- C9, hence, was developed as a solution by there being a chance of having both, only one, or no power roles at all. The most commonly seen setup nowadays, but California and Pie E7 are being experimented with as even fairer alternatives.
California - OPEN
Deep South - OPEN
Kingmaker - OPEN
10 or more players, 2 factions (Mafia/Assasins, Town)
TOWN- 5 Townies, 1 Kingmaker, 1 Kingmaker's Heir (OPTIONAL: Masons, Cop, Doctor)
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 3 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
Kingmaker is built upon the idea of, well, a king- there is no majority lynch, but each night a pro-town Kingmaker crowns a king for the following day. The king's vote is the only one that counts towards a lynch, and only one vote is required. A backup kingmaker is determined pregame (a vanilla townie, no aware of this role until activated) if the first kingmaker is killed, however if both kingmakers die, the game reverts to a classic lynch mob.
Lyncher - OPEN
5 or more players, 2 factions (Lyncher, Town)
TOWN- 3 Townies, 1 Lynchee
Victory when Lyncher is dead
LYNCHER- 1 Lyncher
Victory when Lynchee is dead
This is a form of Mafia where there is no Night phase, and the anti-town faction wins only through directing the lynch. When a player is lynched, his/her role is revealed and the game continues into the next day immediately.
Lyncher with Jester - OPEN
5 or more players, 2 factions (Lyncher, Jester Town)
TOWN- 2 Townies, 1 Lynchee
Victory when Lyncher is dead
LYNCHER- 1 Lyncher
Victory when Lynchee is dead
JESTER- 1 Jester
Victory when lynched
A variant of Lyncher with a Jester.
Nightless - OPEN
Pie E7 - OPEN
Strawberry - OPEN
Quicklynch Nightless - OPEN
INTERMEDIATE
Bad Idea - OPEN
? Players (example given is 20), two factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 13 Daykill Vigilantes, 3 Cops
Victory when Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 3 Mafia Goons, 1 Daykill Godfather
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
It's called Bad Idea Mafia for a reason- every pro-town player has the ability to kill any other player at any time of day, instantly ending the day. This is not a one-time ability, but usually has a limitation on it- most games state that after your first kill, you must at least wait 24 hours for your second, and after your second, you must wait 48 for your third, and after that 72, etc. The game is known for it's... chaos.
Big Love - OPEN
Confrontation - CLOSED
2 players, ? factions
Confrontation Mafia is a two-player mafia mutation which is based upon the scenario of two mobsters meeting in the dark with guns drawn. Aware that they are both mafiosos, but unaware if their famiilies are allied- do they shoot, or hold their fire? The mod PMs both players with their respective alliances, as the game is played by both players discussing whether or not to shoot or trust. At the end of a set time limit, a choice- to SHOOT or TRUST- is sent to the mod, and any player who made the right choice is declared a winner. This means drawing is a possibility. This is commonly played via an online chatroom with the mod present with a time limit of a few hours.
Dethwing Classic - OPEN
5 players, 2 Factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 1 Sane Cop, 1 Insane Cop, 1 Paranoid Cop, 1 Naive Cop
Victory when Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 1 Mafia Goon
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
Otherwise known as Dethy, this game is built around analysis of results- since players are never aware of their own sanities, only careful result analysis can help them identify the mafioso in their midst. Since the Mafioso has no investigative abilities, he obviously has to fake his results and confuse the town's logic to survive until nightfall.
Fire and Ice - OPEN
Jester Mafia - OPEN
Inadvertant Mountainous - CLOSED
? players (example is 7), Two factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 1 Nurse, 1 Deputy, 1 Miller, 2 Townies
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 investigation-immune Mafia
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
A setup which is sometimes used in closed games just to confuse the players- the way the game is set up is that even though the role PMs allude to power roles within the town, none actually exist. The nurse only gains her doctor abilities when the doctor dies, but there is no doctor, so this is irrelevant. Same with the deputy and his cop abilities. Since there are no investigations, the Miller and investigation-immune Mafia are also relevant, and this game turns out to be nothing but vanilla C9. The game is based around the confusion arising from the players until they figure this out.
Kingmaker - CLOSED
10 or more players, 2 factions (Mafia/Assasins, Town)
TOWN- 5 Townies, 1 Kingmaker, 1 Kingmaker's Heir (Masons, Cop, Doctor, Hero, Etc.)
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 3 Mafia Goons (or one Mafia Godfather)
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
Similar to the Open version of Kingmaker, only that it is a closed setup, hence more advanced roles may appear. The hero role may or may not exist in these games- if the King chooses to kill a hero, the King himself dies.
Medical - OPEN
10 players, Two factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 1 Doctor, 1 Weak Doctor, 1 CPR Doctor, 1 Paranoid Doctor, 1 Quack Doctor, 1 Naive Doctor, 1 Nurse
Victory when all Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 2 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
Note that players are never aware of their own sanities. The Naive doctor, for example, is only told that he is a doctor. Otherwise, this game plays normally, and is called thus because of the massive ammount of doctors and the lack of a vanilla townie role. Weak Doctors die if they protect a mafioso, CPR doctors kill their target if he is not facing a nightkill, paranoid doctors protect and roleblock their target, quack doctors kill their target, naive doctors do not actually protect, and the nurse becomes a doctor when the sane doctor dies.
*Methodical - OPEN/CLOSED
Picking Simplicity - OPEN
PR Basic - CLOSED
???
PR Basic is a Post Restriction game, where all pro-town roles are given post restrictions and Mafia have to invent their own to fit in with the crowd- this is infact a common way for scum to be found, via 'unlikely' PRs. PRs usually suit the character of the role given to each player, which then usually fits into the greater theme, and that is also another common way. PR Mafia has no limitations on setup, other than the actual Post Restriction part, and so technically any of these setups seen here could be turned into a closed PR Mafia game. In PR Basic, game mechanics remain unaltered and only basic-intermediate roles are seen.
Texas Justice - OPEN
? Players (example given is 20), two factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 16 One-Shot Vigilantes
Victory when Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 4 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
A game very very similar to Bad Idea mafia, except... less of a bad idea, consisting solely of one-shot vigilantes and mafia.
Vigilante - OPEN
Quack - OPEN
12 Players, 2 factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 6 Doctors, 3 Quack Doctors
Victory when Mafia are dead
MAFIA- 3 Mafia Goons
Victory when they outnumber/equal the town
A nightstart game centred around the Doctor role. A quack doctor kills his target instead of protecting them, and quacks are not told they are quacks. Other doctors can protect someone from a Quack's kill.
AND MOST CLOSED THEMED GAMES
ADVANCED
Assasin in the Palace - OPEN
? Players (example given is 14), 2 factions (Town, Mafia)
TOWN- 1 King, 12 Royal Guards
Victory if the King Survives
MAFIA- 1 Assassin
Victory if the King dies
All the guards are informed of the King's identity. The Assassin does not have a nightkill, and instead has a one-shot kill ability that kills both him and the target in a suicide attack to kill the King. If the Assassin is lynched, he has a chance to use this ability once after his death, meaning that he does not need to survive in order to kill the King and win. This is an unsusual setup in that the town is an uninformed majority, and with each day that pases and every person that is lynched an Assasin's number of possible targets- the town must quickly narrow down and lynch the Assassin before he has a chance of finding out who the King is.
